New Delhi, June 11, 2025 – In a significant move to promote energy efficiency, the Central Government is planning to implement a new regulation that standardizes the temperature settings for air conditioners (ACs). Under this proposed rule, ACs will not be allowed to operate below 20°C or above 28°C. v1v6x
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, revealed that the government is considering enforcing this temperature range as a standard for all AC units. The goal is to reduce energy consumption, lower electricity bills for consumers, and ease the load on the national power grid.
Initially, the policy will be introduced as a pilot program to assess its impact before being expanded further. Minister Khattar described the initiative as a first-of-its-kind attempt to regulate indoor cooling practices at the national level.
“Standardizing AC temperatures between 20°C and 28°C will help in curbing excessive electricity usage, especially during peak summer months. If this plan succeeds, households and businesses can benefit from reduced energy costs, and the country will witness a significant reduction in overall power demand,” he stated.
By capping the minimum and maximum temperature settings, the government aims to make cooling systems more energy-responsible without compromising public comfort. This step aligns with India’s broader environmental and sustainability goals, including reducing carbon emissions and optimizing energy use.
If successfully implemented, the regulation could serve as a model for future policies focused on energy conservation and sustainable urban living.
